Own or Borrow?

All things being equal (money, space, etc), would you rather own copies of the books you read? Or borrow them?

  1. I’m addicted to buying books so overall, I guess I prefer to own them! But that being said, I only ever buy books that I know or am pretty sure I’m going to like. I also adore going to the library and borrowing books! But when I find any I absolutely love, I usually end up buying them, anyway! Which is why I currently have about five metre-high piles of books sitting on the floor next to my bookshelf because they don’t fit on there. I think I need another bookshelf.

Here’s my Own or Borrow? (Booking Through Thursday) post!

  4. All things being equal, I’d rather own the ones I really like and borrow the ones I only feel so-so about. That usually translates to borrowing a lot of books and buying new books by authors I really like, books I’ve already borrowed and loved, and the occasional whim purchase (particularly vacation reading).

  15. Mine is posted here http://irishcoda.blogspot.com/2011/06/thursday-memes.html but what I basically said was it depends on the author/book. There are some authors–like George R.R. Martin–who I know I’d read over and over again so I’d want to own their books. There are others that I’d just read once and those I’d rather just borrow.

  16. I love buying books and building my library! I’ve also discovered recently that I can do it cheaply by using Amazon’s used book-sellers.

  17. Difficult to imagine “all things being equal” – great question! Here’s my thoughts:

  23. Great question! Here’s my ANSWER

  24. I like to have books on my shelves, but I only like hardcover, so I don’t buy very often. I love my library very much and I’ve only come across a couple of books I’ve had to take back that were in really bad shape. Great question.

  25. Great question, my past dictates how I feel about owning and borrowing books.

  26. I would buy my own, even if I don’t have time for all of them. Who does anyway?

  28. Haven’t participated in a while! Here’s my response 🙂 http://inthesound.us/2011/06/btt-own-or-borrow/

  29. I would definitely own them!

  30. I’d rather own. I don’t like to borrow anything. I have enough anxiety worrying about my book babies when I loan them out, I don’t want to be responsible for nothing happening to anyone else’s book baby. Plus, I have a thing with used books from people I know, wondering if they ate while reading, had a cold, etc. Germs…ewww. But if I buy it used from a store, somehow that doesn’t bother me cause I don’t know them.. One of those silly quirks I guess.

  31. Good question, and thanks to the other respondents who helped me articulate my own feelings… here.
