Which is worse?

Finding a book you love and then hating everything else you try by that author, or

Reading a completely disappointing book by an author that you love?

  27. No post on the Athenaeum, but here’s my answer!

Definitely reading a disappointing book by an author I love. This was the case with China Mieville and the very disappointing Iron Council, when I adored all his other New Crobuzon books and short stories. Nevertheless, I’m going to finish his bibliography because I really, really enjoy his world-building and stories, and I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I’m rather afraid in some ways, of reading one author’s entire oeuvre, because I’m scared that the author may “lose the magic” and my good run will be broken. Thankfully this hasn’t happened all that often!

The opposite case — liking one book but not subsequent reads — isn’t such an issue, because I have a “guilty until proven innocent” attitude towards authors. If I don’t like the subsequent books, I’ll drop them. But when an author gives me a good run (at least 2 excellent books) then I start becoming very loyal. I guess this attitude simply makes the scenario above even more fraught.

    Good question this week!

  28. Missed last week but I’m back this week. It’s not a long response to the question but at least I participated! 🙂
