Letters! We Get Letters….

Booking Through Thursday

Have you ever written an author a fan letter?

Did you get an answer?

Did it spark a conversation? A meeting?

(And, sure, I suppose that e-mails DO count . . . but I’d say no to something like a message board on which the author happens to participate.)

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

  1. Hi! Happy BTT everyone! Mine’s here

  2. Happy Booking Through Thursday everyone!

    Here is mine!

  3. Happy BTT everyone! Wow, for once I have a really great story to tell in my response to this week’s question. http://nanashi-inc.net/weblog/2007/btt-letters-we-get-letters/

  4. Mine’s up! Happy BTT everyone! 😀

  5. I may have as a child but for the life of me cannot remember. Recently I was so close to writing JK Rowling after hearing that she was going to use the opening of her last book as a platform to ask people to look for little Madeleine. I was nearly in tears. Granted there are SO many other children out there we need to be looking for but using such a global platform was beautiful to me. I wish others would do the same…so many lost children.

  6. My answers are posted, too…

    Have a great weekend, everyone!

  7. Since my answer is a boring “No,” I’ll just post it here!

  10. Great question! My answer is here:

It would be fun some time to take this a step further and discuss whether we have met any authors, stood in line for a book signing, etc.

  11. Oops, I guess this question did also venture into whether we had met an author — but I took it at first to mean did we meet them as a result of correspondence.

  12. I’m afraid I have not. Maybe I should try writing a favorite author sometime. I’ve enjoyed reading the various responses and it makes me want to try it.

  13. Barbara–That’s exactly how it was meant–the question was about letters, not about meetings. (That’s another question for another time!) (grin)

(And, trust me, it’s waiting in queue for the right time to be posted . . . )

  14. My rather short answer is up

  15. Not much of an answer for this week’s BTT. But I put mine up already here.

  16. I think I might have meandered off-topic a little, but my answer is up!

Paper letter, no, not that I remember. Email, yes. In an online interview in 1999, Anne McCaffrey mentioned some pre-production work being done nearby for an animatronic Pern TV series that never materialized. I found an email address for her and sent a message asking if she’d be coming to this area to visit. She said it was unlikely, but would I like some signed bookplates. Needless to day, I accepted, graciously. They arrived in the mail a few weeks later.

I have also exchanged emails (ie one-on-one, not mailing list) with Lois McMaster Bujold. Again, no personal meeting resulted.

  20. My answer is at booksplurge.blogspot.com. Happy BTT!

  21. Ohh, it didnt’ work. Click on my name. *sigh*

  22. I’m late for BTT,I would have liked to post it this time, as it would have been my first!ah well, next time.
The only time I wrote to an author was to Philip Pullman. I was reading his website and decided to send him a short e-mail. I had just finished the “sally Lockhart quartet” and I loved it so I asked him if he was gonna write more about her.
After a few days I get an e-mail by him! Ok I will never know if it was actually him or some of his agents, but anyway, he said that he certainly has some more adventures in mind for her, he only has to find the time. And in the meantime, watch the bbc series (it was last year).
I was very excited cause Philip Pullman is my current favourite author and I never imagined he’d reply:)
