Nightmare Cast

And, the reverse–which actors have been particularly badly cast in roles of characters you first met in the pages of a book? Do you blame the actors or the writers and other film-people for the failure? Who would you have cast instead?

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

  1. I say the worst cast movie was Queen Of The Damned! Ugh! I still remember a review from the local newspaper saying the first hour they waited for Buffy to come in and stake the vampires then when she did not come for them the reviewer hoped Buffy would come and kill the him.

  2. I still remember hearing they cast Tom Cruise as Lestat – he did an ok job, once I got over the initial disappointment, BUT what?!
Totally blame the Hollywood machine, looking to cash in on his popularity – lame!

  3. Here’s mine… in which I bash a very popular actor/movie/series. Oh my. :O

  4. I rant too much about bad movie adaptations, so this question just helped me get on my favourite soapbox once more. Here is my answer.

I think they did a horrible job with The Shipping News. Although the minor characters from the newspaper were done well, the two leads were awful in terms of casting. Julianne Moore and Kevin Spacey? Seriously? Wavey needed to look more like Olive Oyl, and Spacey needed to pack on a hundred pounds or more to truly take on that character. It is essential that Quoyle is obese. Spacey acted the part well, but physically, he was not the right choice. Same for Moore…great acting, but not the right person for the job, physically speaking. Wavey’s plainness is critical…and Moore is stunningly beautiful no matter how hard she may try not to be. Ruined the movie for me.
