Peer Pressure

Suggested by JM:

I was looking through books yesterday at the shops and saw all the Twilight books, which I know basically nothing about. What I do know is that I’m beginning to feel like I’m the *only* person who knows nothing about them.

Despite being almost broke and trying to save money, I almost bought the expensive book (Australian book prices are often completely nutty) just because I felt the need to be ‘up’ on what everyone else was reading.

Have you ever felt pressured to read something because ‘everyone else’ was reading it? Have you ever given in and read the book(s) in question or do you resist? If you are a reviewer, etc, do you feel it’s your duty to keep up on current trends?

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

  1. I rarely give in to peer pressure when it comes to reading. I guess it’s because reading is such a precious thing to me, and I can’t afford to waste it by worrying about what everyone else is reading…

With that said, I did feel an urge to check out Twilight, but only because I’d heard so many good things and so many bad things about it. It was a bit like Christopher Paolini’s Eragon; I wanted to decide for myself how good or how bad it was, instead of having everyone tell me their opinions. And all the discussion kind of piqued my interest.

  2. Nice question. My answer is here.

  3. Thanks for an engaging question!

    Happy BTT! 🙂

  5. […] It’s funny how some people think that if you read, you should have read or you must read certain books. When God of small things won an award, all people talked about was the book. I agree, I did pick it up, but not because of peer pressure, more because of curiosity. I didn’t even buy the book because I wasn’t sure I would like it. I got it from the library and read the first 50 pages. I didn’t like it, but I still read some 20 pages or so because I thought there must be something that I am not getting. I left it half read. There are so many books which I would love instead of spending time on something I do not like. […]

  6. I’ve never been one to read “what everyone else was reading.” I find that the books on the best seller list don’t interest me. I’m more of an exploring reader; I read what I like.

Come check out my post for today, it’s about a great, not so popular book.

  18. Thanks for the prompt! I think I wandered a bit from the subject of books, but here’s my answer.

  19. I’m a first time poster, and my answer is up here.

  20. I’ve tried giving into peer pressure. I tried to read Dan Brown, and I tried to read Harry Potter. Having learned my lesson — that I have zero patience with fiction that I’m just not into — I think I’ll stick to choosing books for myself.

Unless there are free books involved, in which case, there’s not much I won’t try. 😉

  21. Hello! Happy BTT! 🙂

  39. I know nothing about the Twilight books either.

I usually don’t feel too pressured to read certain books but that stems from my having a completely different taste in books. I don’t read most mainstream books or authors with the exception of a few.

  42. Barefoot in High Heels

Oops! I just found the post. I don’t have time to write on my blog right now, but I definitely felt the pressure to read the Harry Potter books. And I was so glad I did! I got them all (except for the final one — it hadn’t come out yet) at the same time for Christmas a few years ago and read them back-to-back — sort of like a chain-reader! They were fantastic!! Hope to participate in future links!!
