I’ve always wondered what other people do when they come across a word/phrase that they’ve never heard before. I mean, do they jot it down on paper so they can look it up later, or do they stop reading to look it up on the dictionary/google it or do they just continue reading and forget about the word?

I do a variety of things, depending on what book I am reading, how interesting the book is and where I am at the time I am reading the book. I prefer to look up the word(s) online using http://www.dictionary.com but I also have a dictionary (hard copy) at work and at home to look up words. Google comes in handy also.

My second BTT, and I’m late as usual….so I don’t get any visitors. Duh…said my 3 years old.

  31. I find myself just reading on for the most part. This because I read in the bath. And often feel badly about doing so – the reading on part not the bath ;-) ! As I know I am missing out on learning something new!
But if it is a phrase that touches something in me I mark it with a pen and look it up later (not often enough)

I’m going to answer right here as this is a really quick one – I look the words up in an online dictionary, usually the Oxford English Dictionary – luckily I have a subscription through my university. Then, I tag the page on del.icio.us with the tag ‘dictionary’ and copy+paste the key definition into the Notes section. I also include where I found the word, usually just the author’s name but sometimes a whole quotation. I can then post lists of interesting words I’ve come across to my blog, which I generate by looking in del.icio.us under the ‘dictionary’ tag – here’s an example:
