Booking Through Thursday

A weekly meme about (mostly) books and reading.

Goldilocks September 6, 2007

Okay, so the other day, a friend was commenting on my monthly reading list and asked when I found the time to read. In the ensuing discussion, she described herself as a “goldilocks” when it comes to reading–she needs to have everything juuuuuust right to be able to focus. This caught my attention because, first, I thought that was a charming way of describing the condition, but, two, while we’ve talked about our reading habits, this is an interesting wrinkle. I’d never really thought about it that way.

So, this is my question to you–are you a Goldilocks kind of reader?

Do you need the light just right, the background noise just so loud but not too loud, the chair just right, the distractions at a minimum?

Or can you open a book at any time and dip right in, whether it’s for twenty seconds, while waiting for the kettle to boil, or indefinitely, like while waiting interminably at the hospital–as long as the book is open in front of your nose, you’re happy to read?

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

    I am a non-Goldilocks kind of reader :)
Meaning I can delve in a book anywhere for no matter how long. Which is the reason why I always carry a book with me. I read on the tram on the way to work, at the gas station while my husband is filling the tank, while standing in queues, etc.

My most frowned upon reading session was when I and a few friends went to take a hike and I read all the way to the cabin. And got involved in what I was reading too :)

Also, I can read from anything. My favorites are of course the books but I have read whole novels not only on the computer screen but also on the screen of my video iPod :P (I do plan to buy an ebook reader sometimes soon but they are not selling any where I live so oh well :| )

Just FYI, folks . . . I don’t know why, but a LOT of comments today are getting caught in the spam filters. I’ve rescued all of them, but thought I’d mention that it seems to be happening to a lot of people. I’ll keep checking the filters to approve the “real” comments, but if your comment doesn’t get posted right away . . . there’s probably some reason for it somewhere, but I’ll make sure your comment makes it here eventually!

    Still catching up.

    http://xinef.livejournal.com/151602.html

I can read under most conditions as long as I’m not in a moving vehicle (other than a plane). I get motion sick if I try to read in a car, bus or train (don’t even mention boats!). Often read at bedtime with barely enough light to see the words. Don’t like reading with glaring sunlight, but usually easy enough to find a bit of shade, or turn my body so that I provide my own shade. Noise isn’t an issue. Comfort is only to the point that I don’t like to be uncomfortable under any conditions! So that last paragraph fits me pretty well.

It all depends on the book for me. If I have to read it, then yes. But if I want to read it, I can read it anywhere.

That IS an excellent way of describing it.
